Markets are the heart and soul of a city. A place where people come together. Traders selling their wares, locals running errands and tourists looking for that perfect souvenir. This fruit and vegetable stall from the Great Market Hall in Budapest was utterly beautiful. I remember walking into the market and being immediately drawn to the incredible display of colour and texture. There’s a contemplative nature to the stall holder, he’s lost in thought, daydreaming perhaps. I was struck by the contrast between his distracted expression and my own feelings of awe. As well as capturing this special moment, the painting is a wonderful celebration of colour. I used multiple, careful glazes of acrylic paint to build beautifully intense colours, highlights and shadows.
